Mechanical and biological filtering

More information

The powerful Tetra FilterJet aquarium filter is suitable for aquariums with a volume of 50 – 230 litres and cleans the water thoroughly thanks to a combination of mechanical and biological filtering. In doing so, it removes both large and small dirt particles from the aquarium water, thereby creating the right biological balance for an intact aquarium.  Mechanical filtering eliminates large impurities from the water, e.g. it can suck up sludge from the substrate as well as suspended solids such as algae and dead plant material. However, the nitrifying filter bacteria play an even more important role. These useful bacteria settle on the filter substrate and break down harmful ammonia and nitrite into nitrate. This is part of the biological filtering and natural degradation process within aquariums. The internal filter is also impressively quiet. The Tetra FilterJet is so easy to install that it is ready for operation in a matter of seconds. The adjustable outlet nozzle ensures optimum water circulation control so that the entire aquarium is evenly aerated. Another advantage of the Tetra FilterJet internal aquarium filter is that its filter sponge is so simple to clean. This substantially reduces the time spent maintaining the filter. You should not clean the filter material with hot water as this would harm the useful filter bacteria that settle in the filter. Likewise, you should never use chemical agents to clean the filter. To protect the filter bacteria population in the long term we recommend that you do not clean the filter and carry out a partial water change at the same time.

FAQs

How often do I have to clean the filter sponge?

You need to clean the filter sponge if it becomes clogged with dirt particles, thereby reducing the flow rate. In this case, you should rinse the filter sponge, ideally using aquarium water to avoid harming the useful filter bacteria that settle on the filter substrates.

How often do I have to replace the filter sponge?

Depending on your water values, you should replace the filter sponge around once a year.

How can I ensure optimum oxygen enrichment?

The oxygen supply should be adjusted in such a way that it creates an optimum oxygen balance. You need to make sure that the water is constantly moving, especially at the water surface. Oxygen bubbles are also a sign of adequate aeration via the venturi valve.

What’s the best way to adjust the outlet nozzle?

Depending on the filter’s position in the aquarium, the outlet nozzle should be adjusted so that it can flow through all the water in the tank. It’s particularly important to ensure that the water surface is constantly moving to prevent the formation of a residue film (combination of bacteria and dirt particles).

What are the advantages of an internal filter versus an external filter?

An internal filter is much simpler to install than an external one. What’s more, by placing the filter directly in the aquarium, you can easily access it, for example to clean or replace the filter medium. With external filters, however, once you’ve opened the filter you have to clean the various filter material in the different filter baskets individually. You therefore need to switch off external filters in order to clean them. A further advantage of an internal filter is that, unlike an external one, you don’t need a cabinet to stow it away.

My filter is making a loud buzzing noise, what can I do/change? What could be causing it?

Check the water level. The motor unit should be completely under water.

Do I need an extra pump for the oxygen supply?

No, the filter has an integrated oxygen supply thanks to the venturi valve.

I just installed my filter for the first time but it won’t work. What can I do?

  1. Check the plug/power supply.
  2. Check whether the pump is fully immersed in the water.
  3. Check the motor/rotor for blockages caused by large dirt particles.

Can the filter also be used for turtles?

The filter is also perfectly suitable for tanks containing turtles.

Is the filter also suitable for young fish/shrimps and dwarf shrimps?

Yes, this filter is particularly suitable for young fish/shrimps and dwarf shrimps. Its fine pre-filter prevents living creatures from ending up in the filter.

Can a heater fit inside the filter? (or: Does the filter include a heater?)

No, a heater can’t fit inside the filter.

Does the filter contain activated carbon?

No, the FilterJet does not contain activated carbon.

Do I have to keep the filter permanently switched on?

All filters should be permanently switched on so that the essential filter biology for cleaning the water can develop. The pumps are therefore designed for continuous operation and to optimise energy consumption.

Is the filter also suitable for larger tanks?

The FilterJet comes in sizes 400, 600 and 900. These different versions make the filter suitable for aquariums with a volume of 50 to 230 litres

How high should the water level be?

The rotor/motor housing must be under water for the FilterJet to work properly.

Is it OK if the pump rests on the gravel?

The filter sponge, as the lowest point, should be at least 3 cm above the substrate, otherwise the suction surface and filter performance are reduced.
